Relations between Türkiye and Senegal

Turkish Embassy in Dakar, which was opened in 1962 is one of first Turkish Embassies in the African Continent. The Senegalese Embassy in Ankara was opened in August 2006. Turkish-Senegalese relations gained a remarkable momentum especially in recent years in political, economic and cultural fields. Until today many bilateral visits has been mutually realized.

Our President has paid an official visit to Senegal within the framework of his West Africa tour organized between 28 February-2 March 2018 accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Economy, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Minister of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Minister of Customs and Trade and Minister of Culture and Tourism.

President of Senegal has visited Türkiye on the occasion of the opening of Çamlıca Mosque on 3rd of May 2019. Lastly President Erdogan paid an official visit to Senegal on 28 January 2020. A bussiness forum was held during the visit.

Relations in the fields of economy and trade have been steadily developing. Bilateral trade volume between countries has reached to 292 million USD in 2019.

Joint Economic Commission (JEC) has been established in accordance with the Agreement on Trade and Economic and Technic Cooperation signed in 1992. First JEC meeting was held in Ankara on 18-19 December 2006, second in Dakar on 6 April 2010, and third in Ankara on 9-11 April 2014. Fourth meeting of the JEC was co-chaired by Minister of Interior of the Republic of Türkiye and Minister of Interior of the Republic of Senegal in Dakar on 6-7 September 2017.

Private sector representatives annually organize business forums in Senegal.

Emerging Senegal Plan of the country covers development efforts in the fields of economy, transport, infrastructure, industry, education, agriculture and food security. Turkish companies have assumed an important role in infrastructure projects.

Turkish Maarif Foundation is currently running schools in Senegal.

Turkish Airlines has 8 passenger and 4 cargo flights to Dakar.

The Turkish Development and Cooperation Agency (TIKA) opened its first Office in Western Africa in Dakar on April 2007.

Since 1992, government of Türkiye grants scholarships to Senegalese students.
