Relations between Türkiye and Niger

Türkiye established diplomatic relations with Niger in 1967. In the framework of its partnership with Africa, Türkiye opened its Embassy in Niamey on 3 January 2012. The Embassy of Niger was opened in Ankara in September 2012. Niger has Honorary Consulates in Istanbul, Bursa and Antalya. There exists important potential for mutual cooperation stemming from close ties rooted in history. Both countries share the common will to promote bilateral relations in every possible field.

Since the opening of the Turkish Embassy, several visits of different levels have already been carried out to establish and reinforce relations and a total of 29 agreements were signed. Prime Minister of the Republic of Türkiye made an official visit to Niger on 8-9 January 2013, while the President of the Republic of Niger has paid a state visit to Türkiye from 10 to 13 March 2014 and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Niger visited Türkiye from 23 to 25 January 2018. The increase of high-level visits between both countries is expected in the upcoming period, with a view to fostering the bilateral relations and strengthening the legal framework of bilateral cooperation.

Within the framework to develop the legal ground of the relations with Niger, several legal instruments have already been enacted, in the fields of health, education, communication, military, political consultations and visa exemption for holders of diplomatic passport.

Signing of the “Agreement of Trade, Economic and Technical Cooperation” on 9 October 2012 has laid down the necessary foundation of the economic and trade relations between Türkiye and Niger.

The bilateral trade volume was 72 million USD in 2019. Turkish exports to Niger have largely increased in the recent years. Türkiye exports mainly food products, furniture, textile, metals, iron and steel products. The first session of the Joint Economic Commission, set up following the “Agreement of Trade, Economic and Technical Cooperation”, was held in Ankara on 5-6 November 2014.

The Turkish Agency of Cooperation and Coordination (TIKA) is involved in a number of technical assistance programs for Niger and undertakes several projects that directly touches upon the daily lives of many Nigeriens, such as schools, clinics, parks and orphanages.

Moreover, Turkish NGOs are providing humanitarian assistance to the brotherly people of Niger.

Turkish Maarif Fondation has “Friendship Schools” in Niger.

Since 1992, Türkiye has provided scholarships to students from Niger within the scope of "Türkiye Schorlarships" program.
