Relations between Türkiye and Mongolia

Diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Mongolia were established on 24 June 1969. The relations gained a new momentum with the opening of reciprocal Embassies in Ulaanbaatar and in Ankara in 1996 and 1997. More than one hundred bilateral agreements have been signed so far to strengthen the legal basis of our cooperation.

Mongolia is home of the Orkhon Inscriptions, which is the oldest known Turkish monuments. Türkiye attaches special importance to deeply rooted Turkish-Mongol relations and puts utmost effort to strengthen its cooperation with Mongolia.

Mongolia adopted the same approach and in its “Foreign Policy Concept”, mentioned Türkiye as the “Third Neighbour” along with the US, the EU, Japan, South Korea and India in 2011.

Then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, paid a visit to Mongolia on 11-12 April 2013. The last bilateral visit at presidential level was paid by the former President of Mongolia Natsagiin Bagabandi to Türkiye, in 2004.

Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu paid an official visit to Mongolia on 11-13 April 2015. This was the first visit from Türkiye to Mongolia at level of Foreign Ministers in 46-year period of diplomatic relations between two countries. Former Foreign Minister of Mongolia Tserenpiliyn Gombosuren visited Türkiye in 1992.

Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım visited Mongolia on 6-8 April 2018.

Last meeting of the Joint Economic Commission (JEC) was held on 21 March 2018.

Minister of Defence of Mongolia paid a visit to Ankara on 13-15 March 2018.

Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye Mustafa Şentop paid an official visit to Mongolia in 27-31 July 2019.
