Relations between Türkiye and Malaysia

Diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Malaysia were established in 1964. Both countries enjoy a broad-based and close partnership.

On 10 January 2014 Türkiye-Malaysia relations were elevated to Strategic Partnership. In appreciation of the two countries’ ever strengthening ties, the Leaders agreed to elevate relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership on 7 July 2022.

Being members to the UN, the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation and the D-8, Türkiye and Malaysia share a common perspective on a broad range of regional and global issues.

Reaching over 3,5 billion USD, bilateral trade volume in 2021 increased almost 50% on year-on-year basis.

The Free Trade Agreement between Türkiye and Malaysia signed in April 2014 and came into force on 1 August 2015, constitutes the first ever FTA that Türkiye concluded with an ASEAN member. With a view to further removing barriers that reduce trade and investment flows between both countries. The protocol expanding the FTA to include e-commerce, services and investments signed on 29 September 2022. In conjunction with the signing of the said Protocol, the inaugural Joint Economic and Trade Council meeting (JETC) was held on the same date.

Some 300 Malaysian citizens currently reside in Türkiye. The current number of Turkish citizens residing in Malaysia is around 650. Under Türkiye Scholarships, hitherto over 180 Malaysian students were graduated from Turkish universities.
