Diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Malaysia were established on 17 June 1964. Both countries enjoy a broad-based and close partnership.
On 10 January 2014 Türkiye-Malaysia relations were elevated to Strategic Partnership. In appreciation of the two countries’ ever strengthening ties, the Leaders agreed to elevate the bilateral relations to the level of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership on 7 July 2022.
Being members to the UN, the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation and the D-8, Türkiye and Malaysia share a common perspective on a broad range of regional and global issues.
The bilateral trade volume currently stands as 5,1 billion USD.
The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Türkiye and Malaysia signed in April 2014 and came into force on 1 August 2015, constitutes the first ever FTA that Türkiye concluded with an ASEAN member The protocol expanding the FTA to include e-commerce, services and investments signed on 29 September 2022 and entered into force in August 2024.
Yunus Emre Turkish Language Center established in Kuala Lumpur in 2017.
Some 700 Malaysian citizens currently reside in Türkiye. The current number of Turkish citizens residing in Malaysia is around 800
