Türkiye established diplomatic relations with Malawi after Malawi declared its independence on 6 July 1964. Turkish Embassy in Nairobi was accredited to Malawi in 1971.

Since 2011, Turkish Embassy in Lusaka is accredited to Malawi. Efforts are underway to open the Embassy in Lilongwe. Malawi is represented in Türkiye through its Embassy in Cairo.

Relations between Türkiye and Malawi remain limited in scope and intensity. Various Ministers and Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Malawi have visited Türkiye on the occasions of international events. There has not been an official visit from Türkiye to Malawi at the Ministerial or Presidential level.

Trade, Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement has been signed in Lilongwe on 5th of October 2006.

MoU between Turkish Foreign Economic Relations Board DEIK and Malawi Trade Confederation was signed in 2016.

Total trade volume between Türkiye and Malawi reached 59,79 million US Dollars in 2024. Turkish exports to Malawi was 6,58 million US Dollars whereas imports from Malawi was 53,20 million US Dollars.

Türkiye’s main export items to Malawi are machine parts, iron/steel tanks, aluminium bars and profiles, prefabricated structures and machinery. Türkiye’s regular import items from Malawi are tobacco and tobacco products.

Through Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), Türkiye is providing development assistance to Malawi in various domains.

A total of 111 Malawian students have been granted Türkiye scholarships since 1992. 7 Malawian students were awarded scholarships for the 2024-2025 academic year.
