Relations between Türkiye and Lebanon

Following the end of the Lebanese civil war, bilateral relations between Türkiye and Lebanon have gained momentum, especially after the official visit of the late Prime Minister Rafik Hariri to Türkiye in 2004. During the years following that visit, many mutual exchanges took place at the level of Prime Minister and Ministers, which have paved the way for improving bilateral relations in various fields.

Foreign Minister H.E. Mr. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu paid an official visit to Lebanon on August 23, 2019. Minister Çavuşoğlu received by President Michel Aoun, the Speaker of the Parliament Nebih Berri and Prime Minister Saad Hariri. Minister Çavuşoğlu also held several bilateral meetings.

Türkiye has always attached importance to the stability, security and prosperity of Lebanon. During the July-August 2006 war between Lebanon and Israel, Türkiye played a proactive role in trying to bring about a ceasefire. Türkiye also contributed to efforts to find a solution to the political crises which erupted in 2006 in Lebanon that ended with the signing of the Doha Agreement in 2008. Following the UN Security Council Resolution 1701 which established UNIFIL, Türkiye has actively participated in this peacekeeping and monitoring mission. Türkiye also contributes financially to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, which was established through UN Security Council Resolution 1757 and is mandated with the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the 14 February 2005 assassination of Rafik Hariri.

Türkiye will continue to stand against all attempts to undermine Lebanon’s sovereignty, security and stability. In this regard, Türkiye will continue to support brotherly Lebanon and the Lebanese people with whom we share deep-rooted historical ties.
