Relations Between Türkiye and Haiti

Relations between Türkiye and Republic of Haiti have been limited due to geographical distance and different foreign policy priorities of both countries. However, within the scope of the outreach policy of our country towards Latin America and the Caribbean region, which has gained momentum in recent years, the attention has been paid to the region, new Embassies in the region, development and technical cooperation projects started via Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) and institutional relations with regional organizations have contributed to the development of our bilateral relations with Republic of Haiti as well as the other regional countries.

The Embassy of Türkiye in Santo Domingo is accredited to Republic of Haiti. Türkiye has an Honorary Consulate General in Port-au-Prince.

After the earthquake which occurred near the capital city Port-au-Prince and caused the death of more than 300 thousand people, Türkiye provided financial and in-kind aids that worth 1 million US Dollars each. Also, with the aid campaign launched by the Directorate of Religious Affairs, donation that worth 3 million Euros is collected. After the Hurricane Matthew which happened in October 2016, with the aim of recovering the damages it caused, Presidency of Disaster and Emergency Management (AFAD) and Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) provided financial aid and equipment worth 124 thousand US Dollars. Lastly, after the earthquake on 14 August 2021, humanitarian aid materials were sent to the regions affected by the earthquake by AFAD and TIKA.

Türkiye allocated staff to the United Nations Stabilisation Mission (MINUSTAH) in Haiti which was established with the aims of provision of political stability, modernization and democratization of the National Police Force, provision of security and public order, and free elections since the beginning of its operation in 2004. Türkiye has also provided staff to the United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (MINUJUSTH), which superseded the MINUSTAH as of October 15, 2017 and reached the end of its operation period in October 15, 2019.

Foreign Minister H. E. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu paid a visit to Haiti on 17 August 2020 and met with the late President H. E. Jovenel Moïse.

The late President Jovenel Moïse, together with the Haitian Minister of Defense and a delegation of Haitian business people, participated in the Antalya Diplomacy Forum (ADF) held on 18-20 June 2021. President Moïse was accepted by our President H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the margin of ADF.

The trade volume between the two countries was approximately 140,94 million USD (Türkiye’s exports: 139,9 million USD, Türkiye’s imports 1,04 million USD) by the end of 2021.
