Due to geographical distance, the relations between the two countries remained limited in the past. However, following Türkiye's outreach policy towards the Latin America and Caribbean region, the relations began to develop further.

The President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana H.E. Bharrat Jagdeo, the Deputy President H.E. Ronald Hercules and the Minister of Finance H.E. Ashni Singh paid an official visit to Türkiye in October 2009, to attend the Annual Meeting of the World Bank.

The Foreign Minister of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, H.E. Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett attended the first Ministers’ Meeting of Türkiye-Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Consultation and Cooperation Mechanism, held in Istanbul on 17-24 July 2014.

The Foreign Minister of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, H.E. Carl Greenidge attended the Fourth Foreign Ministers’ Meeting of Türkiye-Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). Foreign Minister H.E. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu had a meeting with Foreign Minister H.E. Greenidge on the margin of this meeting and a Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of Political Consultation Mechanism between the two Foreign Ministries was signed.

The Embassy of Türkiye in Port of Spain is accredited to Guyana.

The trade volume between the two countries was approximately 29,6 million USD (Türkiye’s exports: 28,6 million USD, Türkiye’s imports: 1,2 million USD) by the end of 2019.
