Relations between Türkiye and Guatemala

Bilateral relations between Türkiye and Guatemala have been developing rapidly since the opening of the Turkish Embassy in Guatemala in 2015. Besides its Embassy in Ankara, Guatemala has an Honorary Consulate in Istanbul as well.

In February 2015, Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu paid a visit to Guatemala in order to participate in the Türkiye-Central American Integration System (SICA) Foreign Ministers Forum. This was the first visit between the two countries at the Foreign Minister level.

During the visit H.E. Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu signed the agreement granting Türkiye Extra-Regional Observer status in SICA. H.E. Minister Çavuşoğlu also met with Foreign Minister of Guatemala H.E. Carlos Raul Morales.

H.E. Minister Morales paid a visit to Türkiye on 19 April 2017, during which the Guatemalan Embassy in Ankara was officialy opened with a ceremony attended by H.E. Minister Çavuşoğlu. As part of the visit, Minister Morales participated in the Türkiye-SICA Second Foreign Ministers Forum which took place in Istanbul on 20 April 2017.

H.E. Minister Çavuşoğlu visited Guatemala on 20-21 May 2019 for the Türkiye-SICA Third Foreign Ministers Forum. During the visit, Minister Çavuşoğlu met his counterpart former Minister of Foreign Affairs Sandra Jovel and officially opened the new chancellery of the Turkish Embassy in Guatemala. Minister Çavuşoğlu was also received by the former President Morales during the visit.

Foreign Minister Mario Adolfo Bucaro Flores visited Türkiye on 10-12 August 2022; met with his Turkish counterpart Foreign Mister Çavuşoğlu and addressed at the 13th Annual Ambassadors Conference. During the visit, the Ministers signed the Cooperation Agreement on Culture and a Memorandum of Understanding on Protocol Matters.

Bilateral trade volume between the two countries was 145,96 million USD in 2021. (Türkiye’s exports: 131,06 million USD, Türkiye’s imports:14,90 million USD)
