Diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Ghana was established in 1958
following the independence of Ghana. Turkish Embassy in Accra first was
opened in 1964 but closed due to austerity measures in 1981 and re-opened
on 1st February 2010. Embassy of the Republic of Ghana was opened in Ankara
in 2012, respectively.
The Presidential visits paid by our former President H.E. Mr. Abdullah Gül
on 23-24 March 2011 to Ghana and by former President of the Republic of
Ghana H.E. John Dramani Mahama on 21-24 January 2013 to Türkiye, have paved
the way for further enhancement and strengthening of the relations.
H.E. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Ghana between 29 February
and 1 March 2016 created a new milestone in bilateral relations. During
that visit, a Business Forum was held with the participation of 150 Turkish
businessmen and their Ghanaian counterparts. Lastly, H.E. Shirley Ayorkor
Botchwey, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of the
Republic Ghana paid an official visit to Türkiye between 11-14 January 2020.
Türkiye and Ghana enjoy close and cordial relations as development partners.
Turkish companies have been operating mainly on energy and construction
sectors in Ghana.
The bilateral trade volume between Türkiye and Ghana which amounted to 399,5
million USD in 2015, reached 478,9 million USD in 2016. As of 2018, trade
volume is 353,3 million USD between two countries. Türkiye exports mainly
cement, pasta, insulated cables and wires, flour, iron and steel products,
chemical fertilizers to Ghana. Turkish imports include mainly gold, cocoa
and cocoa products and cotton.
Joint Economic Commission has convened four times so far. The last meeting
of the Comission was held on 14-16 April 2014 in Accra. Thanks to the
efforts of the Turkish Foreign Economic Relations Board and several
chambers of commerce and industry in Türkiye in cooperation with their
Ghanaian counterparts, mutual visits of the business people have enabled
progress in bilateral trade and business relations.
Türkiye is providing development assistance through Turkish Cooperation and
Coordination Agency to Ghana in various domains.
Turkish Airlines flies to Accra 7 times a week.
Since 1992, government of Türkiye grants scholarships to Ghanaian students.
