Relations Between Türkiye and Eritrea

Türkiye was one of the first countries to recognize Eritrea after it gained independence in 1993. Our Embassy in Asmara opened on November 1, 2013. Eritrea’s Embassy in Doha is accredited to our country.

Efforts are underway to develop our political, economic and consular relations with Eritrea, with whom we have a common historical and cultural past of over 300 years.

Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Mohamed Saleh visited our country on the occasion of the 1st Ministerial Review Conference on Turkey-Africa Partnership held in Istanbul on December 16, 2011.

On November 16, 2012, the then Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmet Davutoğlu visited Eritrea and met with President Isaias Afwerki. This visit was the first visit from our country to Eritrea at the level of a Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The first political consultations between the two countries were held in Asmara on March 9-10, 2016.

In 2024, our exports to Eritrea amounted to 39.7 million USD. The main products in our exports to Eritrea are processed food products, agricultural machinery and agricultural products, and chemical fertilizers.

Turkish Airlines operates three flights per week on the Istanbul-Asmara route. The number of flights increases to four per week in the summer months.

In the 2024-2025 academic year, 5 Eritrean students continue their education in our country with Türkiye Scholarships. Since 1992, 70 Eritrean students have benefited from Türkiye scholarships.
