Türkiye is among the first countries recognizing and establishing
diplomatic relations with Timor-Leste (also known as East Timor) after its
official independence on 20 May 2002. Turkish Embassy in Jakarta has been
accredited to Timor-Leste since 2003.
Türkiye and Timor-Leste engage in dialogue within the Community of
Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), to which Türkiye became an Associate
Observer at its 10 th Summit held in Dili on 23 July 2014.
Furthermore, Türkiye’s cooperation with the Least Developed Countries
(LDCs) provides another avenue for strengthening relations with
Timor-Leste.
The first Political Consultations between Türkiye and Timor-Leste were held
in Ankara on 16 May 2018. These consultations have been the first ever
bilateral official political interaction between the two countries.
