Relations between Türkiye and Djibouti

Diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Djibouti were established in 1977. The Embassy of Djibouti in Ankara was inaugurated in 2012 and the Turkish Embassy in Djibouti was inaugurated in 2013.

Relations between Türkiye and Djibouti have been steadily developing in political, economic and commercial fields.

President of Djibouti H.E. Ismail Omar Guelleh paid a visit to Türkiye on 16-17 January 2009 and 19-20 December 2017. The President of Djibouti also visited Türkiye on 23-25 April 2015 within the scope of theCommemoration Ceremony of the 100th Anniversary of Çanakkale Land and Sea Battles and participated to the oath-taking ceremony of our President on 9 July 2018.

President of the Republic of Türkiye, H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan paid a visit to Djibouti on 23-25 January 2015. During his visit, Ambouli Friendship Dam and II. Abdülhamit Han Mosque’s construction decisions were taken. These two projects stand as the two concrete symbols of the friendship between our countries.

Djiboutian Speaker of the Parliament H.E. Mohamed Ali Houmed paid a visit to Türkiye on 7-12 July 2019 with the members of his parliament.

President of the Turkish Grand National Assembly H.E. Mustafa Şentop attended to the 42nd Conference of the African Parliamentary Union on 27-29 November 2019 upon the invitation of the Speaker of Djibouti. On the occasion of this visit, II. Abdülhamit Han Mosque was inaugurated.

The fourth Türkiye-Djibouti Joint Economic Commission (JEC) Meeting was held in Ankara on 18-19 February 2020. On this occasion, H.E. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye, met on 19 February 2020 with H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Djibouti, who is Co-Chair of the JEC.

Bilateral trade volume between our countries in 2018 was 197 million Dollars. In 2019, this amount reached 252 million Dollars.

Turkish Government, within the framework of Türkiye Scholarships Programme, allocates undergraduate and graduate scholarships to students from Djibouti. 243 scholarships have been allocated since 1992. The number of Scholarships allocated to Djiboutian students during the 2019-2020 academic year was 16.
