Relations between Türkiye and Costa Rica

Türkiye and Costa Rica opened mutually their embassies in San José and Ankara, in September and November 2014, respectively.

There is a political consultation mechanism between the two countries. The second round of political consultations between Türkiye and Costa Rica took place in Costa Rica on February 24-26, 2025.

The first official visit from Costa Rica to Türkiye, at the level of head of state, was realized in November, 2009, by the then President of Costa Rica Mr. Oscar Arias.

Following the earthquake disaster that occurred in Türkiye in February 2023, the then-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica Mr. Arnoldo André Tinoco visited Türkiye on February 16-18, 2023, to demonstrate Costa Rica’s solidarity with Türkiye.

The diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Costa Rica were established in 1950. 2025 marked the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and several cultural events were organized in both countries by the respective Embassies.

Most recently, in April 2026, Ms. Signe Zeikate, wife of the then-Costa Rican President H.E. Rodrigo Chaves, the-then Foreign Minister Mr. Arnoldo André Tinoco, and Ms. Adriana Jiménez, wife of the then-Foreign Minister Mr. André Tinoco, participated in the Fifth Antalya Diplomacy Forum (ADF 2026). Within this scope, the then-Foreign Minister Mr. André Tinoco attended as a panelist to the panel entitled “The Future of Latin America and the Caribbean: New Realities”.

Following the ADF 2026, Ms. Signe Zeikate, wife of the then-Costa Rican President H.E. Rodrigo Chaves, and her accompanying delegation held meetings in Izmir and Istanbul with business circles, primarily DEIK, as well as the Izmir Chamber of Commerce and the Aegean Businesswomen's Association (EGİKAD), and established contacts for cultural cooperation.

The “Friendship Group Agreement” for the establishment of an inter-parliamentary friendship group between Türkiye and Costa Rica was signed on June 16, 2005. The Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group was established on the Turkish side in 2011, and on the Costa Rican side in 2013.

The bilateral trade volume between Türkiye and Costa Rica was approximately 175 million US Dollars in 2025. While bananas and pineapples lead Türkiye’s imports from Costa Rica, the majority of exports of Türkiye consist of iron and steel products.

As of 2026, 17 students from Costa Rica have benefited from Türkiye Scholarships. This number is expected to increase in the forthcoming period.
