The relations between Türkiye and Chad dates back to 16th century.

Türkiye recognized the independence of Chad on the very same day, on 11 August 1960, and the decision of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Chad was taken by the Council of Ministers on 29 November 1969. The establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries was announced to the international public opinion on 27 January 1970 with the press releases issued simultaneously from the capitals of the two countries.

The Turkish Embassy in N’Djamena became operational on 1 March 2013, and the Embassy of Chad in Ankara became operational on 10 December 2014. Following these developments, there had been an increase in bilateral relations.

The President of Chad, H.E. Idriss Déby Itno paid an official visit to Türkiye on 27-30 April 2000 upon the invitation of former President Süleyman Demirel.

Chad’s then Prime Minister Kalzeubé Payimi Deubet came to Türkiye on 15-18 December 2014 as part of an official visit, during which numerous bilateral agreements were finalized.

The first Türkiye-Chad Joint Economic Commission meeting was held in Ankara in 28 January 2015.

In November 2016, H.E. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and H.E. President Idriss Déby Itno met in Istanbul, taking advantage of Latter’s participation in the Türkiye-Africa Economy and Business Forum.

On 26 December 2017, H.E. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan paid a State Visit to Chad and through this visit, 7 agreements were signed. Also, during the visit, Türkiye-Chad Business Forum was organized in N’Djamena with the participation of approximately 100 Turkish businessmen part of the delegation of H.E. President Erdoğan.

President of Chad participated in the inauguration ceremony of President Erdoğan held in Ankara on July 8, 2018.

Between 26-28 February 2019, President Idriss Deby Itno visited Türkiye. During his visit, 4 agreements were signed.

These mutual visits provided important momentum to bilateral relations between Türkiye and Chad.

Türkiye’s bilateral trade with Chad is 72,4 million USD in 2019. Türkiye’s exports to Chad amounted to 39,9 million USD, while its imports were 32,5 million USD.

Turkish Airlines (THY) began direct flights from İstanbul to N’Djamena on 12 December 2013. TİKA (Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency) activated its office in N’Djamena on 1 January 2015.

Turkish Maarif Foundation Chad Country Directorate became operational on 13 May 2017 and currently manages a school complex.

Türkiye provides Türkiye Scholarships for Chadian students each year in undergraduate, graduate and doctoral level.
