Relations Between Türkiye and Burundi

The Embassy of Burundi in Ankara has started its operations as of June 2014, whereas the Turkish Embassy in Bujumbura was inaugurated in December 2018.

Former president of Burundi H.E. Pierre Nkurunziza attended the 2nd Istanbul-Somalia Conference held in Istanbul in June 2012.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Burundi Laurent Kavakure participated in the Presidential hand-over ceremony held in Ankara on 28 August 2014.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Burundi Alain Aimé Nyamitwe paid an official visit to Türkiye on 13-16 June 2017. This visit was the first official visit from Burundi at Foreign Minister level.

Former speaker of the Burundi National Assembly, Pascal Nyabenda paid an official visit to Türkiye on 20-23 February 2018. During his visit, he was received by H.E. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Foreign Minister H.E. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu met with former Foreign Minister Ezéchiel Nibigira of Burundi, who paid a visit to Türkiye on 5-7 March 2020.

In 2020, the bilateral trade volume between Burundi and Türkiye was 3 million USD (Export from Türkiye 2,9 million USD; import to Türkiye: 0,1 million USD).

The total number of scholarships provided to Burundian students within the framework of ‘‘Türkiye Scholarships’’ programme since 1992 is 155.
