The diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Australia were established in 1967. Turkish Embassy in Canberra was opened same year, and the Australian Embassy in Ankara in 1968.
Türkiye has two General Consulates in Sydney and in Melbourne, as well as an Honorary Consulate in Brisbane. Australia has a General Consulate in Istanbul and a Consulate in Çanakkale.
The Çanakkale Battles have a special place in the history of relations between the two nations. The commemoration ceremonies of the Çanakkale Battles are held in Çanakkale on 24-25 April every year with wide participation from Australia. The Anzac Day Dawn Service was attended by Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles in 2024, Governor-General of Australia Sam Mostyn in 2025, and Chief of the Australian General Staff Admiral David Johnston in 2026.
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Çanakkale Battles, 2015 was declared as reciprocal Year of Culture between Türkiye and Australia and various activities were performed in both countries.
Former Australian Prime Minister the Honourable Tony Abbot visited Türkiye on 22-26 April 2015 on the occasion of the centenary commemorations. Former Prime Minister of Australia, Malcolm Turnbull also visited Türkiye on the occasion of the G20 Summit being held in Antalya on 15-16 November 2015 and was received by our President.
Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove visited Türkiye on 3-9 August 2015 to participate in the ANZAC Day commemorations held in Gallipoli. During his visit, General Governor was received by the President of the Republic of Türkiye.
Former Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop visited Türkiye on 23-25 April 2017 on the occasion of the 102nd Anniversary of the Çanakkale Battles and Anzac Day Ceremonies and met with H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of Türkiye.
Official visit from Türkiye to Australia at the Presidential level took place in 1991. Then-Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye paid a visit to Australia in 1994 and Turkish Prime Minister visited Australia in 2005. Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye paid a visit to Australia in 2016 within the framework of the MIKTA Speakers’ Consultation Meeting. Speakers and members of both countries’ Parliaments regularly meet under the framework of MIKTA, G20 Parliamentary Speakers' Summit (P20) and other multilateral forums.
Türkiye and Australia enjoy efficient cooperation in the UN, G20 and MIKTA (Mexico, Indonesia, Korea Republic, Türkiye, Australia).
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong on the sidelines of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Kuala Lumpur in July 2025, and again on 22 September 2025 in New York on the margins of the 80th UN General Assembly.
Türkiye and Australia also reached a landmark agreement for hosting UN COP31 climate summit: Türkiye will host COP31 in Antalya in November 2026, while Australia chairs the negotiations.
Furthermore, effective 17 April 2026, Türkiye unilaterally granted visa-free entry to ordinary Australian passport holders for tourism and transit purposes, for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
The Turkish community in Australia, which number over 150.000 constitutes a bridge of friendship between the two nations.
The Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies of the Australian National University has launched the Turkish Program in 1994.
The Turkish-Australian Center at the Çanakkale 18 Mart University was opened in April 2009 by the then Minister of Foreign Affairs Australia Stephen Smith. International Maarif Schools of Australia commenced its activities on 4 February 2019.
