Relations between Türkiye and Argentina

The relations between Türkiye and Argentina goes back to the signing of the protocol of consular affairs between the Ottoman Empire and Argentina in 1910.

Following the proclamation of the Republic of Türkiye, a bilateral Friendship Agreement was signed in Rome in 1926, which officially marks the starting point of diplomatic relations. Following the signing of the Friendship Agreement, accredited Ambassadors from both countries presented their respective letters of credential.

In 1992, President of Argentina H.E. Carlos Menem visited Türkiye and President of Türkiye H.E. Süleyman Demirel, visited Argentina in 1995. In 1998, H.E. İsmail Cem was the first Foreign Minister of Türkiye who visited Argentina.

President of Argentina H.E. Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner visited our country on 20-21 January 2011. H.E. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited Argentina, as the erstwhile Prime Minister, on 8 September 2013.

Foreign Minister of Argentina H.E. Hector Timerman visited Türkiye to address the 7th Ambassadors Conference on 6 January 2015. He had a meeting with Foreign Minister H.E. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and was received by H.E. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Foreign Minister H.E. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu visited Argentina on January 30, 2017 and met with the then Foreign Minister H.E. Susana Malcorra and Vice President and Senate President Gabriela Michetti.

Our President, President of Turkish Grand National Assembly, Minister of Finance, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Minister of Industry and Technology, Minister of Family, Labor and Social Services, Minister of Commerce, Minister of Defense, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, President of TIKA, President of the Constitutional Court, our MPs and senior officials attended to the meetings held throughout the G20 Presidency of Argentina in 2018. On the occasion of the G20 meetings, high-level officials from Türkiye also held bilateral meetings with their Argentine counterparts.

On the margins of the G20 Summit, H.E. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a meeting with the then President of the Republic of Argentina, H.E. Mauricio Macri.

On the margins of the G20 Summit in Buenos Aires, “the Agreement to Avoid Double Taxation in Matters of Income Tax and to Prevent Tax Avoidance and Evasion” was signed on December 1, 2018 between Türkiye and Argentina. The ratification process on the Argentinian side is still pending.

Foreign Minister H.E. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu had a meeting with the then Foreign Minister H.E. Felipe Sola, on June 29, 2021 on the margins of the G20 Summit in Matera, Italy.

Foreign Minister H.E. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, held his first bilateral meeting with Argentine Foreign Minister H.E. Santiago Cafiero, on the margins of the G20 Foreign Minister’s Meeting in Bali, on 8 July 2022.

Flights from Istanbul to Buenos Aires via Sao Paulo commenced in December 2013. The current flight frequency is 4 times a week.

The trade volume between the two countries was around 870 million USD (exports: 312,9 million USD, imports: 870 million USD) by the end of 2021. In the first three quarters of 2022, the total trade volume has increased to 932 million USD.

The IX. Political Consultation Meetings between Türkiye and Argentina was held on July 4, 2022, in Ankara.

The IV. Joint Economic Commission Meeting took place in Ankara, on May 31, 2022 in hybrid format, under the co-chairmanship of Deputy Minister of Commerce Mustafa Tuzcu and Argentine International Economic Relations Secretary Cecilia Todesca.
