No:166, 13 July 2011, Press Release Regarding the 4th meeting of the Libya Contact Group

Established at the London Conference of 29 March 2011 with a view to providing political guidance to international community’s efforts on resolving the Libya crisis and in order to coordinate these works, the Libya Contact Group will meet for the fourth time in Istanbul on 15 July 2011 under the co-chairmanship of the Republic of Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, host of the previous meeting.

The Group’s previous meetings were held in Qatar, Italy and the United Arab Emirates, respectively. Mostly at the level of Foreign Ministers and Secretaries General, approximately 40 countries and international organizations are expected to attend the Group’s fourth meeting.

It is envisaged that during the Istanbul meeting developments in Libya since the previous meeting held in Abu Dhabi will be assessed; the quest for a political solution to end the Libya crisis on the basis of the "road map" prepared by Turkey will be dealt with; and activities carried out by the international community in order to ensure political change and transformation in line with the legitimate aspirations of the Libyan people will be coordinated.

Furthermore, it is foreseen that consultations will be held during the meeting about further steps that can be taken from now on in the context of humanitarian and reconstruction aid for the people of Libya by countries and international organizations that participate in the work of the Contact Group.

A Chair’s Statement that reflects the common understanding of the Contact Group participant countries and international organizations regarding the results of the meeting will be issued at the end of the meeting.
