No: 45, 11 February 2014, Press Release Regarding the Comprehensive Settlement Negotiations in Cyprus under the Supervision of the UN

We welcome the resumption of comprehensive settlement negotiations between Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot sides on the Island today (11 February), under the auspices of the UN.

Turkey hopes that the aim of a just, lasting and viable settlement of the Cyprus issue is achieved as soon as possible within the framework of the joint declaration of the leaders and the convergences reached during the process, on the basis of the political equality of both sides and the new partnership that will be established with two equal Constituent States.

Turkey, expecting the establishment of a new partnership based upon reconciliation and equal status by the constituent will of both peoples who are the co-owners of the Island, will maintain its determined and constructive support to the efforts of the UN Secretary General to this end. Turkey wishes that with a just and lasting solution be reached, the Island of Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean turn into an area of peace, stability and partnership.

The commendable political leadership of the President of the TRNC, H.E. Mr Eroglu in the efforts pursued for the resumption of the negotiation process and the constructive stance of the leaders of the political parties in the TRNC are essentially an indication of the pro-settlement attitude that the Turkish Cypriot side will follow in the process ahead. Turkey, as always, will cooperate closely with the TRNC throughout this negotiation process, provide the necessary support with all its institutions and continue to stay one step ahead in doing its share for its successful outcome.
