No: 257, 24 November 2010, Press Release Regarding the Artillery Attack by North Korea Against the South Korean Island

As a result of the artillery attack by North Korea on 23 November 2010 against the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong, two South Korean soldiers died and 19 people, including civilians, were injured.

We are deeply concerned with the recent developments which have raised the tension in the region and closely monitor the situation.

This attack is of a nature, which not only jeopardizes peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula, but could also have negative repercussions on global peace.

We condemn this belligerent act and call for full compliance with the terms of the Armistice Agreement.

Turkey believes that disputes should be solved through peaceful means and dialogue. In this regard, it is important to refrain from actions escalating the tension.

We hope that the situation reverts back to normalcy without delay.
