No: 22, 20 January 2014, Press Release Regarding the Third Round of Negotiations between Somalia and Somaliland

The third round of the talks aiming at developing political dialogue and relations between Somalia and Somaliland was hosted by Turkey between 16 and 19 January 2014 in Istanbul. A communiqué on agreed issues was adopted following the negotiations between delegations chaired by H.E. Mr. Abdikarim Hussein Guled, Minister of Interior of the Federal Government of Somalia and H.E. Mr. Mohamed Bihi Yonis, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Government of Somaliland.

This communique includes crucial matters such as the procedure to be followed in the subsequent negotiations, the decision-making process, the establishment of a joint secretariat in Turkey to institutionalize the negotiation process and the conduct of a round of talks once in every 90 days.

Turkey welcomes the Communique aiming at developing the relations between the governments of Somalia and Somaliland. Turkey, which has been making every effort towards the prosperity and stability of the people of friendly and brotherly Somalia in cooperation with the international community, will be continuing to host and help the negotiations between Somali and Somaliland.

H.E. Mr. Ahmet Davutoğlu has called and congratulated both Ministers at the end of the meeting.
