I congratulate with my warmest wishes the female members of our Ministry on the occasion of 8th of March, the International Women’s Day.
Preventing discrimination against women in all spheres and ensuring equal opportunities for women and men is the assurance of a sound and sustainable future for societies.
As a country which has a deep rooted experience regarding the equality of women and men, Turkey has attached particular importance to increasing women participation in political, economic, social and cultural life and strengthening women’s status in society. Turkey has made a considerable progress in this area through legal and implementation measures targeting the protection and improvement of women’s rights.
Being a party to international conventions on women’s rights, Turkey promotes cooperation at regional and international levels aiming at the improvement of women’s rights all over the world and contributes to efforts in international platforms. Turkey is the first country to sign and to ratify the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women, known as the “İstanbul Convention”.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is among exemplary institutions in terms of generating high-ranking female bureaucrats. Having had 46 female Ambassadors so far, the Ministry currently has a total of 2947 female officers at various positions and ranks. This number corresponds to 35% of total officers. We intend to increase this ratio in the forthcoming years. Our female officers make great contributions to ease the heavy workload of the Ministry, perform their duties both inside and outside Turkey with great success and represent our country in the best way.
With these heartfelt feelings, I congratulate the International Women’s Day of our Ministry’s female members and the spouses of male officers who contribute to the success of their spouses along their carreers.
