Joint Statement by H.E. Ahmet Davutoğlu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey and H.E. Burhanuddin Rabbani, Chairman of the High Peace Council of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, 25 February 2011

A high level delegation of the High Peace Council led by H.E. Professor Burhanuddin Rabbani, former president of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and Chairman of the High Peace Council visited Turkey on February 22 – 25, 2011, upon the invitation of H.E. Ahmet Davutoğlu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey. The High Peace Council delegation had an extensive exchange of views with Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmet Davutoğlu. H.E. Abdullah Gül, President of the Republic of Turkey, H.E. Mehmet Ali Şahin, Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly and H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey received the delegation during its visit.

At the meetings, the Afghan delegation briefed the Turkish leaders on recent developments in Afghanistan and important measures undertaken to promote peace and reconciliation as a major initiative to stabilize Afghanistan. The Chairman of the High Peace Council H.E. Professor Rabbani thanked the Turkish people and Government for the comprehensive assistance in various areas of economic, military and institutional development, including the provision of military and professional training to the Afghans. The Delegation also thanked the Turkish Government for supporting the peace process in Afghanistan and for its efforts towards strengthening regional cooperation and promoting understanding among countries in the region and beyond.   

Both sides underscored that:

·         The peace process in Afghanistan is an Afghan-led process and must be governed by Afghans. The government and people of Turkey are determined to support the Afghan Government, the High Peace Council and the Afghan people in this important undertaking.

 

·         The government of Turkey recognizes the High Peace Council as a leading Afghan body to coordinate Afghan peace and reconciliation efforts and stands ready to fully support its initiatives and efforts.

 

·         Both Afghanistan and Turkey will work in consultation and cooperation with all concerned parties in promoting the peace process in order to ensure successful outcomes.

 

·         Afghanistan and Turkey will work together in promoting close cooperation with regional countries as well as the international community in order to ensure that peace and stability in Afghanistan will be restored through an integrated approach of successful transition, peace and reconciliation processes.
