Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu paid an official to Tehran on 17 December 2014. Within the scope of his visit, Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu Çavuşoğlu was received by the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mr. Hassan Rouhani, met with his Iranian counterpart Mr. Javad Zarif as well as Mr. Ali Larijani, President of the Islamic Parliament of Iran.

At Foreign Minister’s meeting, views were exchanged on bilateral relations as well as regional and international developments. Foreign Ministers put emphasis on the economic cooperation between the two countries and expressed their resolve towards enhancing the trade volume. Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu also stated that many Turkish businesspeople wanted to make investments in Iran and expressed his content for the upcoming entry into force of the Preferential Trade Agreement.

At the meetings, cooperation in the area of transportation was also on the agenda and Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu pointed out that disputes should be settled in a manner that would be beneficial for both countries. Iranian Foreign Minister underlined his expectation on convening the Joint Transportation Committee at an early convenience.

The Ministers also exchanged views on the developments in Syria and Iraq, and fight against DEASH. Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu emphasized the importance of regional ownership regarding the solution of regional problems.

At his meeting with Ali Larijani, President of the Islamic Parliament of Iran, Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu expressed that significant efforts are spent in order to enhance political and economic relations between the two countries and that high level visits are very important in achieving this aim. Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu also stated that inter-parliamentary relations have to be developed and friendship groups working together will help a great deal.

On the other hand President of the Islamic Parliament of Iran Larijani stated that Iran and Turkey are the most important and active countries in the region and thus they must have more frequent consultations. Touching upon the issue of counter-terrorism, Larijani emphasized that once consensus between Iran and Turkey is reached, stability in the region will be obtained.

At Foreign Minister’s meeting with the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Rouhani, bilateral relations were extensively reviewed. President Rouhani stated that there is a political will in both countries to develop political, economic and cultural relations.
