History of the Organization:

The Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) was established in 1956 with the name Asian Legal Consultative Committee as part of the decisions taken at the Bandung Conference held in April 1955. Later, in 1958, in order to ensure the participation of the African countries, its name was changed to Asian-African Legal Consultative Committee, and then to its current name, the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization, in 2001.

The purpose and functions of the Organization, as set out in the AALCO Statute, are to provide its members with advice on international law, to serve as a platform for cooperation and exchange of views on common legal issues concerning Asia and Africa, to convey the Organization's views on international law issues to the United Nations and other international organizations, to convey the Organization's views on issues under consideration by the United Nations International Law Commission (ILC), and to provide opinions and recommendations on Commission reports.

Its “Annual Session” functions as the general assembly of AALCO Annual Sessions are usually organized by a member state on a rotating basis between the two regional groups of Asia and Africa. To date, 62 Annual Sessions have been held. The 63rd Annual Session will take place in Kampala, Uganda, from September 8 to 12, 2025.
