Turkey will host the 5th World Water Forum and Ministerial Conference in Istanbul in March 2009, in cooperation with the World Water Council.

In accordance with the decisions taken at the UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, the first World Water Forum was held in Marrakech, Morocco in 1997. Convened in every three years, the second Forum took place in the Netherlands in 2000, the third in Japan in 2003 and the fourth in Mexico in 2006. Almost 20,000 participants and 140 Ministers or high-level officials attended the fourth Forum in Mexico. Turkey attaches great importance to the 5th World Water Forum and Ministerial Conference, in the context of utilizing water resources in order to achieve sustainable development.

The Official Ceremony for the Kick-off Meeting of the 5th World Water Forum will take place in Istanbul on 20 March 2007.
