Turkey - Iran Relations

As two neighboring countries, Turkey and Iran share 560 km’s long border, unchanged for almost 400 years. In addition to the Turkish Embassy in Tehran, Turkey has consulates general in Tabriz, Orumiyeh and Mashhad. Iran is represented in Turkey by its embassy in Ankara, and its consulates general in İstanbul, Trabzon and Erzurum.

Turkish-Iranian bilateral relations are evolving on the basis of the principles of non-interference in domestic affairs, mutual respect and good neighborliness. Efforts are made to further enhance the political dialogue both on bilateral and regional issues, through reciprocal visits and mechanisms such as High Level Cooperation Council and joint commissions in different sectors.

The Turkish-Iranian High Level Cooperation Council (HLCC) which was established in 2014, has provided a structured basis to the Turkish-Iranian relations. Below is the chronological list of the HLCC meetings:

-1st meeting of the HLCC: Ankara, 9 June 2014 (during the visit of H.E. Hassan Rouhani, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Turkey)

-2nd meeting of the HLCC: Tehran, 7 April 2015 (during the visit of H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Turkey to Iran)

-3rd meeting of the HLCC: Ankara, 16 April 2016 (during the visit of H.E. Hassan Rouhani, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Turkey)

-4th meeting of the HLCC: Tehran, 4 October 2017 (during the visit of H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Turkey to Iran)

-5th meeting of the HLCC Ankara, 20 December 2018 (during the visit of H.E. Hassan Rouhani, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Turkey)

President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, H.E Rouhani also paid a visit to Turkey on 16 September 2019, to participate fifth trilateral Summit on Syria. On this occasion, he had a bilateral meeting with our President.

At the level of Foreign Ministers, H.E. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Turkey paid a visit to Iran on 20-21 June 2019. H.E. Javad Zarif, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran paid a bilateral visit to Turkey on 17 April 2019. H.E. Zarif also visited Turkey on 9 November 2019 and 9 December 2019, on the occasions of the “24th Meeting of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Council of Ministers” and “Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process 8th Ministerial Conference” respectively.
