The 700 Anniversary of the Beginning of the Ottoman Cultural and Scientific Heritage and its Multinational Dimensions (Unofficial Translation) No:22 - February 23, 2000

Among the decisions taken during the UNESCO General Conference of November 1997 on the anniversary events that UNESCO would participate was the 39th article titled "The 700 Anniversary of the Beginning of the Ottoman Cultural and Scientific Heritage and its Multinational Dimensions". In the framework of this decision, anniversary activities to commemorate and to promote culture, science and arts of the Ottoman State were planned to be held in Istanbul on 15-16 September 1999 under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Turkey, with the participation of many high level guests, including heads of states. However, these activities were postponed upon the earthquake disaster that hit Marmara Region on 17 August 1999.

This time the anniversary programme will be organized in Istanbul on 17-18 April 2000.

Representatives of the countries and organizations that the Ottoman Empire established political, economic and cultural ties and relations throughout its history are invited to follow this programme. Many participations at the level of heads of states or governments, ministers or special envoys from 88 states, 8 organizations, cities and establishments are expected. The number of participants, together with accompanying delegations, is expected to be around 500 persons.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is charged with the implementation of the programme and an Executive Secretariat has been established within the Ministry.

Many bilateral contacts are also expected to be made at the margins of the Anniversary Programme.

More detailed information on the programme will be supplied at a press briefing to be held here following the regular press conference of the Spokesman of the Ministry on 22 March 2000.
