Relations between Türkiye and Mexico

The Friendship Agreement, which established diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Mexico was signed in 1927. Mexico became Türkiye’s second strategic partner in Latin American and Caribbean region in 2013.

Türkiye and Mexico have mutual Embassies in their respective capitals. Mexico has Honorary Consulates in İstanbul, İzmir and Mersin while Türkiye has Honorary Consulates in Veracruz, Cancun, Monterrey, Tijuana and Guadalajara.

Former Mexican President H.E. Enrique Peña Nieto paid an official visit to Türkiye in December 2013. This was the first presidential level visit between the two countries. On that occasion, 13 agreements and documents were signed including the Memorandum of Understanding, which elevated the bilateral relations to strategic partnership as well as the Protocol Establishing the Binational High Level Commission.

President of the Republic of Türkiye, H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited Mexico in February 2015. As part of many concrete results of the said visits, Air Services Agreement, Agreement on Avoidance of Double Taxation and Agreement on Mutual Promotion and Protection of Investments were signed.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu visited Mexico on 2-3 February 2017. During the visit, Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) opened its first regional coordination office in Mexico City and the first meeting of Political Subcommittee of the High Level Binational Commission was held.

During his visit to Mexico on 19-20 May 2019, H.E. Minister Çavuşoğlu met with his Mexican counterpart H.E. Marcelo Ebrard as well as the Speaker of the Senate, H.E. Marti Batres and gave a conference on Turkish Foreign Policy at COMEXI.

Turkish Airlines direct flights to Mexico City and Cancun were launched in August 2019.

The trade volume between the two countries reached 1,3 billion USD (Türkiye’s exports: 601,6 million, Türkiye’s imports: 677,9 million USD) in 2019.
