Relations between Türkiye and El Salvador

The relations between Türkiye and El Salvador have gained considerable momentum in recent years. Following President Bukele’s taking office in El Salvador in 2019, Minister of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador, H.E. Alexandra Hill, made one of her first official overseas visits to Türkiye on August 19-24, 2019. During this visit, an agreement was reached on the reciprocal opening of embassies. Salvadoran and Turkish Embassies were inaugurated in 2020 and 2022, respectively.

President Bukele’s official visit to Türkiye on January 19-21, 2022 was historically significant as it was the first visit from El Salvador to Türkiye at Presidential level. During this visit, six agreements were signed in several areas including trade and economy, defense industry, development, and education. President Bukele also paid visits to prominent institutions such as TAI (Turkish Aerospace Industries), the Turkish Contractors Association and Ankara University.

The trade volume between the two countries is around 25,3 million US Dollars as of 2022. During President Bukele’s visit to Türkiye in 2022, the target was set to 100 million US Dollars for the short term.
