The visit of Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu to New York

Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu paid a visit to New York on 5-6 January 2017 to meet with the new UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who assumed his duties as of 1 January 2017.

Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu has been the first Foreign Minister that UN Secretary General Guterres met after starting office. Congratulating the UN Secretary General on assuming his duties, Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu stated our readiness to provide full support in UNSG Guterres' efforts.

In the meeting which provided the opportunity for a comprehensive exchange of views on the issues of Syria and Cyprus, current developments were discussed. Stating that our constructive contributions to the work undertaken by the UN will continue, Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu also touched upon issues of Mediation, Alliance of Civilizations, fight against all forms of discrimination including Islamophobia and the UN reform at his meeting with UNSG Guterres.

During his visit, Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu also met with Foreign Minister Kotzias of Greece to discuss a range of bilateral and regional issues. Furthermore, Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu received UNSG Special Advisor on Cyprus Eide and shared our views on the Cyprus talks to be held in Geneva.
