The Second Meeting of the Strategic Dialogue Mechanism between Turkey and Germany held in İstanbul

The Second Meeting of the Strategic Dialogue Mechanism, established in accordance with the Joint Declaration signed in Berlin on May 2013 in order to create an institutional perspective and a strategic dimension in the relations between Turkey and Germany, was held in İstanbul on 19-20 June, 2014, under the co-chairmanship of Mr. Ahmet Davutoğlu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, and Mr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany.

Within the context of the meeting, delegations under the leadership of both Foreign Ministers exchanged views on bilateral relations as well as on international and regional issues and discussed cooperation opportunities.

Speaking at the joint press conference following the meeting Foreign Minister Davutoğlu said “Today, with the five main working groups, we have taken solid steps towards further development of the bilateral relations. First working group, bilateral relations; second, within the framework of the European Union Joint Working Group on Europe; third, Working Group on Fight against Terrorism; fourth, Working Group on International Security and fifth, Working Group on Regional and International Problems. We, as the two Ministers, addressed the conclusions of these working groups.”

Foreign Minister Davutoğlu noted that in terms of political relations, it was agreed to further strengthen the political, economic and cultural infrastructure. Emphasizing that EU membership is a strategic goal for Turkey, Foreign Minister Davutoğlu stated that Turkey expects Germany, as the pioneer country of the EU to contribute to the Turkey-EU relations.

Foreign Minister Davutoğlu underlined that Turkey and Germany are determined to fight against terrorism without associating with any religion or culture. On the other hand, Foreign Minister Davutoğlu, in the context of international security said that the two countries always pursue a close cooperation in NATO and pointed out that Turkey and Germany share common perspectives on international security and security of energy supply.

Maintaining that there is a dynamic international conjuncture Foreign Minister Davutoğlu said “In this dynamic conjuncture, development of a Turkish-German common perspective through consultations concerning the Balkans, East Europe, Black Sea, the Middle East and Caspian Basin is essential not only for the interests of the two countries but also for lasting peace and stability in Eurasia and the Middle East”.
