QA-4, 3 February 2021, Statement of the Spokesperson of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Hami Aksoy, in Response to a Question Regarding the Agreement Reached Between the United States and the Russian Federation on the Extension of the New START Treaty (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) for Five Years

We welcome and support the decision of the United States and the Russian Federation to extend the New START Treaty for five years. The Treaty will expire on 5 February 2021. The New START Treaty, which limits nuclear capabilities of the United States and the Russian Federation, has a global significance as the last agreement that ensures strategic stability between the two countries.

We hope that this important step will contribute to the efforts to strengthen the arms control regime and to address challenges to global security.
