QA:2 - 30 January 2008, Statement of the Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey in Response to a Question (Unofficial Translation)

Question: One of the newspapers reported yesterday that Turkey had given a promise to Greece about the opening of the Heybeliada Seminary, and that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had sent a letter on this subject to the General Staff Command. Can we have your comments on this?

Answer: It is a known fact that the minorities in Greece and Turkey is one of the items high on the agenda of the two countries. A promise has not been made to Greece concerning the re-opening of the Heybeliada Seminary. A letter on this subject has not been sent to the General Staff by our Ministry. On the other hand, the possibility of opening to education of the Heybeliada Seminary is being examined by Y.O.K. (Higher Education Board) and the Ministry of National Education. A decision has not been made on this matter yet.
