President of Latvia H.E. Andris Berzins is paying an official visit to Turkey upon the invitation by President of Turkey, H.E. Abdullah Gül.

During the tete-a-tete and the meeting between the delegations held in the Çankaya Presidential Palace, political, economic, commercial and cultural relations were reviewed in all aspects and additional opportunities for cooperation were discussed. Moreover, views were exchanged on other current regional and international issues.

Within the scope of the meeting, “Cooperation Agreement between The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) and Industry and Commerce Chamber of Latvia” and “Declaration on the establishment of Joint Economic and Trade Commission (JETCO) between the Republic of Turkey and the Republic of Latvia” were signed.

Speaking at the joint press conference, President Gül said that after Latvia declared independence in 1991, Turkey – Latvia relations and friendship which date back to 1925 has been reinvigorated vigorously and the Friendship and Cooperation Agreement was signed on 1994. President Gül added that from that date forward, numerous high level visits took place between Turkey and Latvia.

Underlining that Turkey and Latvia are the two countries in Europe whose economies are growing, President Gül expressed his belief that as a friend and an ally that has always supported Turkey’s EU accession process, Latvia will continue to support Turkey during Latvian EU Presidency.
