No:186 - 2 November 2008, Press Release Regarding the First Summit Meeting of the “Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean” (Unofficial Translation)

It will be recalled that the first Summit meeting of the “Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean” project was held on the 13th of July 2008 in Paris. More than 40 countries comprising EU members, candidate states and Mediterranean partners attended this Summit. Turkey also took part in the Summit with a delegation headed by Prime Minister Erdoğan and including Foreign Minister Ali Babacan.



Following this Summit, where the decision to implement the “Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean” Initiative was adopted, the first Ministers of Foreign Affairs meeting will be held on 3-4 November 2008 in Marseille. Turkey intends to attend the meeting with a delegation led by Minister Ali Babacan.



It is envisaged that at the meeting which will commence with a working dinner on November 3rd and continue on the 4th of November, issues such as the location of the Secretariat of the Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean, its working modalities, the projects to be given priority within the framework of the initiative, as well as the Middle East Peace Process, will be discussed and a Declaration will be issued at the end of the meeting.



Minister Ali Babacan will also be holding bilateral contacts with his counterparts at the margins of the Ministerial meeting.



Turkey actively supports enhancing cooperation in the Mediterranean. In fact, Turkey took part in the Barcelona Process established in 1995 and supported the development of cooperation in the Mediterrenean in diverse areas within the framework of this process. It is with this understanding that Turkey has decided to participate in the “Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean” initiative established with the goal of rendering the Barcelona Process stronger and more effective.
