NO:132 - 25 July 2008, Press Release Regarding the Decision of the Two Leaders in Cyprus To Start Negotiations on September 3, 2008
We welcome the decision of the two leaders in Cyprus to start comprehensive negotiations on September 3, 2008, which was taken in their meeting today (25 July),

With a view to reaching a settlement to the Cyprus question on the basis of the established UN parameters, namely bi-zonality, political equality and a new partnership founded by the two Constituent States of equal status; Turkey has supported, since the very outset, the resumption of the comprehensive negotiations under the auspices of the Good-Offices Mission of the UN Secretary-General.

With this understanding, Turkey will extend its full support to the negotiation process that will start on 3 September between the two sides.

In their meeting of 25th July, the leaders have also decided that work will commence on areas of cooperation, under 16 headings, such as environment, cultural heritage and crisis management, within the framework of the work carried out by the Technical Committees that were established under the 21 March process,

Turkey extends its support to such efforts that will contribute to building trust and cooperation between the two sides on the Island and hopes that the work of the Technical Committees, which were established upon the initiative of the Turkish Cypriot side, will produce positive results.
