NO:100 - 6 June 2008, Press Release Regarding Turkey's SEECP Chairmanship-in-office (Unofficial Translation)
At the Meeting of the Heads of State and Government of the Southeast Europe Cooperation Process (SEECP), held in Pomorie (Bulgaria) on 21 May 2008, Turkey’s SEECP Chairmanship-in-office for the term May 2009 – May 2010 was approved.
In this respect, Turkey has became part of the SEECP Troika as of May 2008 and will continue to be in the Troika until May 2011.
The SEECP is the only Balkan consultations forum that reflects the common will for cooperation and the authentic voice of the region. This particular aspect of SEECP is internationally acknowledged, especially by the EU. Besides Turkey, SEECP participant states are Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia.
The role in the region of SEECP has been further enhanced as the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) became operational this year under the political umbrella of SEECP. The RCC, which has replaced the EU-led Stability Pact for Southeastern Europe, will produce concrete projects related to the region.
Since its inception, Turkey has actively supported the activities of SEECP. In this context, Turkey contributed considerably to the preparation of the founding document (Charter) of SEECP signed in 2000 and to the updating of the Charter in order to formalize the organic and institutional relationship between SEECP and RCC.
The SEECP Chairmanship will provide Turkey with the opportunity to further contribute to peace and stability in the Balkans to which we attach great importance. Turkey is determined to continue its active support to SEECP.
