Message by H.E Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye, on the occasion of Human Rights Day, 10 December 2021

Today, we celebrate the 73th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations (UN) Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the milestone for the protection of human rights.

Experiences gained and challenges faced worldwide since 1948 demonstrate the value of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which aims to protect human rights and enable individuals to live in human dignity.

Our country continues to take human rights-oriented steps with a view to eliminating the effects of the difficult conditions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on our citizens,in particular women, children and the elderly. We once again demonstrated in a concrete manner our unwavering resolve for reform through the Human Rights Action Plan.

We continue to defend the rights of the refugees we are hosting in our country and those whose fundamental rights are being violated in all parts of the world.

With the strength we derive from our deep-rooted diplomacy tradition, while leading the formation of important initiatives on the table, we reach effectively and rapidly those in need in the field “for a fairer world”.

We observe that the rise of racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia and hate speech threatens social peace and cohesion and violates freedom of religion and conscience as well as the principle of prohibition of discrimination, that are guaranteed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We address the dangers created by and lead the initiatives aimed at fighting these harmful trends in all international platforms we are members to. We draw attention to the importance of the culture of living together.

The theme “EQUALITY-Reducing inequalities, advancing human rights” set by the UN on the occasion of this year’s Human Rights Day, should not remain as a mere wish. This target can only be reached through the actions of the international community with an understanding of cooperation, solidarity and common responsibility.

I congratulate the Human Rights Day of our nation as well as the whole humanity and wish for a world based on peace and justice where human rights and human values prevail.
