The visit of UN Secretary-General António Guterres to Turkey

UN Secretary General António Guterres paid his first official bilateral visit to Turkey after taking office, on 10-11 February 2017. Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu was the first Foreign Minister to visit UN Secretary General António Guterres in New York on 5 February 2017.

Following the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister and UNSG Guterres, Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu participated the meeting between delegations.

UN Secretary General was also received by President Erdoğan on 11 February 2017.

During the meetings, Guterres expressed his gratitude for the hospitality and generosity that Turkey extends to the refugees. UNSG Guterres also stressed that Turkey is an extremely important member country for UN and has a key role in the resolution of all conflicts in the region. Guterres also praised Turkey’s leading role in “The Alliance of Civilizations Initiative” and “Friends of Mediation Group”.

Negotiation process to achieve a just and lasting solution to the Cyprus issue, Palestine, UN reform were issues also discussed during the visit.
